In an age of short form content, AI-generated art, and voraginous social media, I’ve decided to take an unconventional path: becoming a blogger in the modern world as a form to record our arts, a digital archive inspired by the 2000’s/Y2K websites.
When Websites Were Worlds of Their Own—And Why They Still Matter
There was something about the 2000s webs and blogs that felt like a haven, a curated place to immerse in a single concept, without the intervention of noisy video ads or convergent opinions. Yes! we could read peacefully and voluntarily from one creator/universe at a time and also hear our own thoughts, similar to reading a book or magazine.
A personal website allows to CUSTOMIZE through sections, graphics and media, allowing your personality to shine through. After 2010’s minimalistic/ hyper-corporative interfaces that dominated the cyberspaces, we’ve been left in white boxes with homologated style.
With the Y2K comeback in 2025 the personal websites and artist blogs are slowly reviving, after we are all burnt out from social media’s side effects and tired of the algorithm controlling what we consume.
WAYS TO ENJOY THE INTERNET IN 2025 Y2K-STYLE
- Browse some neocities sites. (I’ve been having a blast seeing all uniquely made personal blogs inspired by 90’s and 2000’s personal sites.) Neocities is a free hosting and social network platform.
- Create your very own internet corner. (Neocities or SpaceHey are great if you know some code and want to connect with more users).
- Watch 1990s and 2000s website tours on youtube. (There’s ASMR ones!)
- Check out internet archives, you may find your favorite childhood website.
